Memorial Day Weekend

Its called Whalen Island and its wonderful!
First thing they did out of the truck was...dig in the sand.

Day 1 we took a 5 mile hike to Cape Lookout.  The weather was perfect.  Overcast and not a breath of wind.  The trail was very muddy and I would never want to hike this one in the rain or wind.  See those cliffs?  During some sections, we held onto the boys.

 Nesting grounds on the cliff.

Next up...clamming.  A muddy, squishy good time.  Every little hole is a clam or a sand shrimp.

Boy heaven.  Too bad this campground didn't have showers...imagine what we brought home to wash.

Carrying a sand shrimp...which pinched the skin right off of his finger.

Greg got some fishing in.  Nope we didn't get to eat any.

Naughty boys needed a time out and are praying for a little self control.

More clamming.  This time for cockle shells.  Its easiest to find them bare foot, when you feel like you are stepping on a rock, dig it up.

Dune sledding.  I wasn't into the idea of getting coated with sand and then no way to clean it up.  But the boys didn't mind going to be with sand in their hair, ears, eyes, and everywhere else.

I (Kari) chose to check out the tide pools and found a cool little hidden cove.
We could drive right up on the beach here...see our little red pick up?

Hanging on tight, waiting for the tide.
Nothing relaxes and calms me more than the briny smell of the ocean and the pounding waves!

Next time we will bring goggles.  Charley face planted in the sand and I had to dig so much sand out of his eyes.
Can you tell where we are?  Yep, that's haystack rock.

Playing with sand shrimp.  Greg's flounder bait.

Steaming up those shells.  Butter and cockles.  They looked and smelt nasty.  With cockles, you only eat the foot.  The boys liked them.

 Marshmellow time.
Charley drove me crazy with the fire on this trip.  He is obsessed with it.  It was the only thing he could talk about.
